I was wondering about the name Buddy Revell. Why did you pick the name? Is that a reference to the movie Three O'Clock High?
Kevin: Yes the name is from Three O'Clock High. Nothing too profound, we are movie nerds and name a lot of our song ideas after things from movies so it just seemed right to be a bully from a movie.
Can you give us a history of the band? When did you form? Have you had any significant changes in terms of styles or lineups since you've formed?
Kevin: James, Mark, Scott, and I formed about two years ago and wrote the songs on the EP. We needed a singer so our good friend Chris Swanson filled that role for the first year. He sadly had to move on so we took a little break. We tried out a bunch of singers and eventually found Mike at a bar singing Black Sabbath louder than the jukebox, so we asked him to join and two weeks later we played out with him singing. We have only written one new song with him so I am not sure how the music will change yet but I am sure it will be pretty similar to what we already have.
You share a lot of bills with bands from different genres, and when I saw you play live, it seemed like you might've been influenced by hardcore and street punk bands as much as by more traditional heavy metal bands like Black Sabbath. Where do you see yourself fitting in to the musical landscape?
Kevin: Yeah you pretty much nailed it. If we fit somewhere between Black Flag and Mastodon I think we would be pretty happy with ourselves as a band; I think the band would be happy about that. Just as long as it is aggressive and dark.
In 2011, you released the Bring Forth the Snake EP. Do you have any recording plans for the near future? Do you think you'll take the DIY approach, or try to put something out on a larger label?
Kevin: After Mike came in we almost immediately started playing shows so we got a bit behind on recording, but we have songs written and ready to record and we want to make something for the end of this year. We don't have any plans for what to do with it yet but I am sure we will figure it out soon.
If you could make a split album with any band, who would it be?
Kevin: The Melvins. Hands down, who wouldn't want a split with the Melvins? But if we could pick local bands, Dropouts/Buddy Revell and Composted/Buddy Revell.
Is there anything else you wanted to mention?
Kevin: Just some thanks to both you for the interview and to Metal Thursday at Ralph's in Worcester.
