Hräsvelg: We are very excited about the split with Thrall and our split with Ipsissimus, they should both be out later this year. In the meantime, we are taking the summer off from playing shows to write and record our first full length album. After that, we will be playing a show in Boston with Infernal Stronghold. Then we head out on a week long tour with our brothers in black/death band Martyrvore, dates and info will be posted very soon.
A lot of bands seem to be going in the direction of playing more ambient types of black metal, but Nachzehrer seems to have a more aggressive style that's very distinct. Is that something that you set out to do from the beginning, and do you think you'll continue with this style in the future?
Czarnobóg: We don't give a fuck about any of the trendy ambient or music theory geek crap that passes for black metal these days (especially in the U.S.). We've always been drawn to the more raw and aggressive, tracing a line back to bands like Bathory, Tormentor, Gorgoroth etc... right up to current Australian, Scandinavian, German and South American bands who still do it right. As long as Nachzehrer is a band we will continue to make thrashing black noise, definitely no slowing down or cleaning up for us.
Hräsvelg recently got stopped on the Red Line because somebody was concerned about his wearing a bullet belt. In the past few years it seems like Boston has gotten a reputation as being anti-metal, but at the same time, there are plenty of bands coming out of Boston, and plenty of shows being played in Boston. Is there anything different about playing in Boston, as opposed to Worcester or Baltimore, or are people exaggerating the situation?
Hräsvelg: The underground metal scene in Boston has felt little to no effect from the recent rules (no moshing) that have been put into place in the city. Shows that are worth going to are usually under the radar of the police and take place in smaller venues where there aren't hired security teams. People still come out in droves to support both local and touring bands. If anything the underground scene in Boston is only growing stronger and will continue to do so.
Do you think that there's something about New England, whether it's history or climate or temperament, that draws people into playing black metal?
Czarnobóg: New England has a history and climate that has inspired a long and dark tradition of folklore and writing. Even before overly superstitious Christians landed here there were tales of cursed forests and the evil spirits who inhabited them. Maybe its something in the water? Either way, there is some great black (and blackened death) metal coming out of the region these days. Bands people should check out: Ipsissimus, Bog of the Infidel, Haxen, Blessed Offal, Morgirion, Obsidian Tongue, Katahdin, Grue, Sarcomancy, Herugrim, Witch King, Untombed, Cold Northern Vengeance, Martyrvore, Hekseri, Blood of the Gods & Warstrike 666.
Is there anything else you wanted to mention?
Hräsvelg: As I mentioned before, keep an eye out for details about our upcoming splits, album and tour.
